The US senate has cleared the Indo-US nuclear deal for discussion paving the way for its clearance before Indian Prime Minister visits US on 25th September 2008. Foreseeing that the deal will be cleared by the US congress, the US President George Bush has taken the risk of inviting the Indian Prime Minister to US on 25th September 2008 for formally signing up the deal.
If the US congress does not clear the deal by 25th September 2008, the bill may take another one year to get the approval, opine experts.
A US unmanned drone aircraft which was spying around the Pakistan tribal belt bordering Afghanistan, was said to have been shot down by tribal people. This is indeed expected to increase the pressure on US to increase its offensive on the Pakistan border with Afghanistan. The terrorists are finding the Afghanistan Pakistan border a safe heaven because of the tacit support of the Pakistan army and the ISI.
Russia is likely to face economic sanctions from European Union due to its recognition of the rebel regions in Georgia. The move has irked European Union and US who feel that Russia has once again started to show its hard hand at its neighbors who are reluctant to follow its unwritten rules. Russia for the time being looks like not disturbed by the EU indications.
The US government has warned Russia that it has to pull out of Georgia immediately without any further delay. US has also warned that the onslaught by Russia on Georgia in spite of withdrawal of Georgian troops from Ossettia town will only worsen the relationship between Russia and US since this is seen as a clear violation of territorial integrity of another country.
Pakistan Military Chief Pervez Musharaf who was the most powerful man of Pakistan for the last several years is at the receiving end from all quarters in the last two weeks. The Pakistan parliament is all set to pass the impeachment motion next week, which is seen as the last nail in Musharaf’s political life.
Today Saudi Arabia has come with a last ditch effort asking the Pakistan Government to stop the impeachment motion and allow Musharaf a safe exit out of Pakistan.
Russia has got into a full fledged bombing of Ossettia town which is part of Georgia. Georgia government has , of late, been seen closer to US which has irked Russia. With the revolt by revolutionary forces supported by Russia being resisted by Georgia, Russia has found a easy excuse to start barging into Georgian town through force. UN has requested Russia to withdraw its attack, since Georgia has already announced pull back of its troops out of Ossettia town.
US government agency, CIA , has accused the Pakistan government agency, ISI, of having terrorist links which is spoiling its efforts in restoring normalcy in neighboring Afghanistan. This is indeed expected to put lot of pressure on the new Pakistan government , and with Obama and Mccain owing their fight against terrorism, Pakistan does not seem to have any other choice, than to stop aiding and abetting terrorism.
WTO talks are in total breakdown phase, with US directly accusing China and India for not being flexible on the subsidies front. Both China and India have been insisting that the US and the Western world of developed countries cut down their subsidies before they open their market for import of food items from these countries. US and Western countries have huge subsidies for their farmers which they do not want to touch.
The Indian government lead by the congress party survived the trust vote this week amidst charges from opposition that crores of rupees were offered to Members of Parliament of opposition parties to make them vote against their party whip, or to abstain from voting. This resulted in the party winning the confidence vote by a neat margin of over 20 votes. Now the realigned coalition will have another six months time to set the house in order, so that they can face the election in a better note.
The much expected discussion between Iran officials and US officials on the Iranian Nuclear program discontinuation ended without any conclusion, and US officials giving two more weeks for Iran to come out with clear road map for halting its nuclear ambitions. They have threatened Iran with UN sanctions, if it defies the UN expectation of nuclear research halt.
